USU International Undergraduate English Requirements

To provide a foundation for academic success, USU requires all undergraduate international students to demonstrate a high level of English language proficiency. The English language proficiency may be demonstrated by meeting one of the following. Students must ask the testing agency to send official exam scores to Utah State University (USU).

High School High school/secondary school education completed in English (minimum 3 years) with satisfactory completion of English courses (excluding English as a Second Language courses).
TOEFL

Internet-based (iBT) exam score of at least 71 on the date of the exam. TOEFL iBT tests taken on or after January 21, 2026, require an exam score of at least 4.0 (1-6 scale).
USU also accepts the TOEFL iBT Home Edition exam.

The institution school code for USU is 4857.* 

IELTS Academic score of at least 6.0 overall band score with a minimum of 5.0 on each subscale* (USU will not accept IELTS General Training test scores.)
MET score of 52.
Cambridge B2 First, C1 Advanced, or C2 Proficiency score of 169.
SAT SAT Evidence-Based Reading and Writing (EBRW) score of 500 or SAT Reading score of at least 27 first administered March 2016. The institution school code for USU is 4857.*
ACT English score of at least 18. The institution school code for USU is 4276.
Post-Secondary/University Completion of at least 24 credits of post-secondary/university course work taught in the U.S. in English, excluding English as a second language courses, and taken at an accredited college/university.

*Scores that are more than two years old at the time the application is complete are not accepted.

International Undergraduate Admissions does not accept Duolingo English test scores.

What if you already speak English?

Undergraduate applicants who believe they demonstrate English language proficiency should complete the English Language Proficiency Appeal form after applying to USU, paying the non-refundable application fee, and uploading all required supplemental items/documents to the online undergraduate application.
