Brand Standards: Guides

Faculty, Staff & University Organizations

Official university departments, divisions, units, faculty, and staff are authorized to utilize Utah State University logos and trademarks for branded goods. To ensure brand integrity, all usage must adhere to the following criteria:

Important Notice about Restricted colors, modified logos, logo creation, and restricted logos.

Only use electronic files or print-ready artwork supplied by University Marketing and Communications. Logos and wordmarks (marks) can only be created by University Marketing and Communications, Trademark Licensing. If you need access to a logo or folder that you do not currently have access to, contact University Marketing and Communications, Logo and Production Coordinator, Aimee Brunson.

  • University marks cannot be used on red products.
  • Logos cannot be modified or manipulated in any way, including color changes.
  • College, department, and program names cannot be incorporated into graphics as this creates a logo, per the university's visual identity standards.
  • Images or graphics of buildings cannot solely be used as designs. If buildings are used, a skyline must be included.
  • The bull mark and the President’s seal are restricted marks and cannot be used.

Required Branded Goods Identifiers

Every piece of university merchandise or apparel must include one of the following official identifiers:

  • The U State Mark
  • "Utah State University" (Text Only - In a non-restricted, commercially licensed font)
  • "Utah State" or "Utah State Aggies" (Text Only - In a non-restricted, commercially licensed font)

The use of an official logo on merchandise is always recommended; however, the marks below may be used in lieu of the official logos on branded products, uniforms, and/or merchandise.

Spirit marks can be used on a wide range of branded goods, uniforms, and merchandise to convey school spirit. However, they cannot be paired or combined with formal marks.

U State

The standalone U State is a spirit mark and can be used as an informal reference to Utah State University on merchandise and branded goods.

Logo Sizing for Branded Goods

To maintain the integrity and legibility of the Aggie brand, all university marks must meet minimum sizing requirements. When scaling your artwork, always ensure the logo remains proportional—never stretched or distorted—based on its height.

Choosing the Right Size

Standard sizing varies depending on the type of mark you are using:

  • Division Wordmarks: For two- and three-line division wordmarks, please refer to the specific minimum size chart below. These requirements differ from the standard "U State" or primary wordmark dimensions to ensure your specific department or office name remains readable.

  • Standard Marks: For all other logos, follow the primary University Logos & Wordmarks chart.

Small Imprint Solutions

We understand that some items—like pens, lapel pins, or watch bands—have very limited real estate. If your imprint area is too small to accommodate our standard minimums, don't worry. You can find approved layouts and creative workarounds in the "Limited or Small Imprint Space" section below.

Limited or Small Imprint Space

When applying the university marks to promotional products, the primary goal is legibility. Certain products have limited imprint space, which may require a departure from standard brand layouts to ensure the mark remains recognizable and high-quality.

On items such as pens, eyewear, lapel pins, or USB drives, etc. the imprint area is often too small to accommodate the primary logos. In these instances, the following accommodations are permitted:

  • A formal logo is not required on small imprint items. However, all items must meet the required branded good identifiers outlined above.
  • If you are part of a college or division that requires its branding to be present, you can reach out to your unit marketing and communications team for waivers on small imprint goods.

Stickers

Stickers remain a popular branded good. Due to size and shape, the full logo or wordmark may not fit or reproduce clearly. Therefore, a formal logo is not required on stickers. However, sticker designs must meet the required branded good identifiers outlined above.

Branded Departmental, College, or Program Assets

High-visibility assets—such as tablecloths, pull-up banners, tents, etc.—serve as formal marketing tools for the university. Because these items often represent the "front door" of your department, college, or program at events, they follow specific formal branding guidelines to ensure a professional and unified Aggie presence.

Design Standards for Tablecloths & Displays

To maintain brand integrity on a large scale, please adhere to the following requirements:

  • Formal Logo Requirement: All tablecloths and formal displays must feature an official university logo. Informal marks (campaign graphics or identity marks) or standalone spirit marks are not permitted as the primary identifier on these items.

  • Minimum Logo Size: To ensure visibility and impact, the university logo must be at least 11 inches high on standard tablecloths.

  • The Area of Isolation: We value the unique identity of our colleges and programs. If you are placing a department, program, or office name near an official mark, you must maintain the required area of isolation (clear space) between the formal logo and your specific text. This ensures the university brand remains distinct and legible.

Why Formal Standards Matter

Formal assets are often the first thing a prospective student or community member sees. By following these sizing and spacing requirements, you ensure that your department looks its best while staying aligned with the One USU brand.

College/Division Required Branding

To maximize institutional impact and ensure a clear brand hierarchy, certain Colleges and Divisions require a unified branding approach. For the entities listed below, all reporting units (including departments, offices, and programs) must use the primary College or Division logo—or the full College/Division name—on all branded goods and promotional products.

  • Extension
    • The 4-H clover must also be present
  • Emma Eccles Jones College of Education & Human Services
      • Small Imprint Areas: If the largest dimension of your imprint area is 2.5 inches or less, the college name is optional. While we encourage including the college name alongside the U-State logo or Utah State University wordmark and your department/program name when space permits, it may be omitted if the design becomes crowded.
      • Large Imprint Areas: Any item with an imprint area exceeding 2.5 inches is required to include the college name.
      • Required Items: Regardless of size, the college name must always be present on:
        • Apparel and bags
        • Notebooks and stationery
        • Pens and writing instruments
  • J. & Jessie E. Quinney College of Agriculture & Natural Resources
    • Work with Licensing & Brand Activation on small imprint goods; this college has multiple options to accommodate various needs
