Media Interviews
Tips for Faculty and Staff Experts
- Always make sure your college’s communicator is aware of scheduled interviews or media requests. For faculty or other experts on Statewide Campuses, please ensure your associate vice president and marketing manager are also aware.
- Identify one to three key messages and about three supporting talking points.
- Avoid using jargon; unless speaking with an industry-focused outlet.
- Have a familiar anecdote to share when discussing complex topics.
- Be brief! Television and radio stories may use only a 10-15 second clip. The shorter your comments, the less likely they are to be edited. Even print reporters may only print a sentence or two per quote.
- If you’re asked something unrelated or outside of your expertise, say so and circle back to your message and talking points.
- You’re representing the university, so please reflect this important role. USU logo apparel is encouraged, but please avoid wearing clothing related to other institutions.
Zoom Interviews
- Never have a window behind you. This will create too much backlight and make you less visible.
- Use a ring light or desk lamp to shine light on your face. Your cell phone flashlight can also be used for this purpose in a pinch.
- Declutter any spaces behind you, utilize bookshelves as a background if possible.

Use USU/UMAC approved virtual backgrounds for white or bare walls.
- When possible, adjust the camera to be slightly above eye level with about 2-3 inches of headroom on screen.
- Allow a second or two before answering questions during the interview. Zoom audio can sometimes be delayed or muted if multiple people are talking at once.
- If you have headphones with a microphone or AirPods, use them. This will help reduce any echoes or other sounds that can interfere with your audio when you’re speaking.
