“Bringing War Home” and “Paint the Desert” Traveling Exhibits on Display at the USU Eastern Library & Learning Commons
Exhibition
The USU Eastern Library & Learning Commons will be hosting a traveling exhibit “Bringing War Home” August 10ththru September 30th. The exhibit features object stories of veterans and military families.
In addition to this exhibit will be a companion exhibit “Paint the Desert: Memory, Identity, and Commemoration on the T-Walls of the Global War on Terror” by A.J. Arriola.
Both exhibits will be available for viewing during LLC open hours: Monday thru Friday, 8am-5pm. Beginning August 31, the LLC will be open Monday thru Thursday 8am-9pm, Friday 8am-5pm and Sundays 4pm-9pm.
The LLC would also like to extend an invitation for visitors to view the Carbon College WWII Memorial Roll, LLC room 108, that was dedicated in April 1946 in honor of the Carbon College students comprising of high school juniors and seniors and college freshmen and sophomores who lost their lives in the war.

Shingo Center Pit Crew Challenge: Kickoff Briefing (event 1 of 2)
Student Activities
The Shingo Student Center kicks off the Pit Crew Challenge, sponsored by Discount Tire. Crews of four from any major will race to build a LEGO car as fast as a NASCAR pit crew changes tires. At the briefing you'll hear how Discount Tire uses a pit crew challenge to build a culture of operational excellence, learn the six ways crews find speed, take home a LEGO practice kit, and run your first timed round. Attendance earns points toward the championship. The winning crew earns an all-expenses-paid trip to Las Vegas on October 19-20th to train with Discount Tire's NASCAR pit crew. Food will be served. The main event is on Sept 23rd, but come to this event for points towards winning and to learn how pit crews go fast! Register to attend.

Teton SUP and Camp

We are heading up to Grand Teton National Park to paddle the scenic Snake River on paddleboards and camp near the magnificent Teton Mountains. We will drive up and camp Friday night, paddle on Saturday camp Saturday night and return back to Logan on Sunday. Trip cost includes transportation, food, paddling equipment, tent, sleeping bag and sleeping pad.

About the Speaker: Dr. Ti Macklin is Director of First-Year Writing at Boise State University, where she teaches and leads work in writing pedagogy, assessment, and student learning. Her scholarship focuses on how students learn and develop as writers, with particular interests in writing assessment, student agency, and the experiences of both undergraduate and graduate students. An award-winning teacher and longtime writing program administrator, Ti is especially interested in creating learning environments that support students as writers and help faculty navigate the changing landscape of writing instruction.

The USU Eastern Library & Learning Commons will be hosting a traveling exhibit “Bringing War Home” August 10ththru September 30th. The exhibit features object stories of veterans and military families.
In addition to this exhibit will be a companion exhibit “Paint the Desert: Memory, Identity, and Commemoration on the T-Walls of the Global War on Terror” by A.J. Arriola.
Both exhibits will be available for viewing during LLC open hours: Monday thru Friday, 8am-5pm. Beginning August 31, the LLC will be open Monday thru Thursday 8am-9pm, Friday 8am-5pm and Sundays 4pm-9pm.
The LLC would also like to extend an invitation for visitors to view the Carbon College WWII Memorial Roll, LLC room 108, that was dedicated in April 1946 in honor of the Carbon College students comprising of high school juniors and seniors and college freshmen and sophomores who lost their lives in the war.

We are heading up to Grand Teton National Park to paddle the scenic Snake River on paddleboards and camp near the magnificent Teton Mountains. We will drive up and camp Friday night, paddle on Saturday camp Saturday night and return back to Logan on Sunday. Trip cost includes transportation, food, paddling equipment, tent, sleeping bag and sleeping pad.

Generating Learning Resources with AI - A talk by Juho Leinonen
Lecture/Readings
Generative AI can support the creation and maintenance of a wide range of learning resources, from programming exercises and interactive course materials to lecture slides. In this talk, I draw on research projects and practical course-development experiences to examine how these capabilities have evolved, what kinds of context are needed to produce useful materials, and how generated resources can be evaluated. Examples include work on generating and contextualizing programming exercises, using AI agents within existing course environments, and comparing AI-generated lecture slides with human-created ones. Across these cases, I consider both the opportunities and limitations of current systems: where they can reduce the effort involved in course development, how their outputs are perceived by students, and which aspects of quality continue to depend on educator expertise. More broadly, the talk explores how generative AI may change the design, production, and evaluation of learning resources in computing education.

Tau Beta Pi Bent Monument Unveiling Ceremony

Join us for the unveiling and dedication of the restored Tau Beta Pi Bent at Utah State University. This monument is dedicated to astronaut and Utah State alumna Mary L. Cleave and serves as a way to recognize her accomplishments and the inspiration she continues to provide to students and the engineering community. The ceremony will include a few short remarks about Mary L. Cleave, the history of the Tau Beta Pi Bent, and the restoration process, followed by the official unveiling of the monument. There will also be time afterward for pictures and to celebrate the completion of the project. Students, faculty, staff, alumni, and other members of the USU engineering community are invited to RSVP at the link given.
