Assessing General Education Outcomes using an Assignment with a Rubric
This page describes how to set-up an assignment to use a rubric for assessing General Education outcomes. Before you begin, review the general education outcomes for your class and determine which assignments (an assignment at the beginning of the class and one toward the end of the class) will be used for the outcome assessment. You can click on the Outcomes link in the left-hand navigation to see which outcomes apply.
Attach Rubric and Include General Education Outcomes
Note: To attach a rubric to an assignment, you first need to have your assignment created and saved. Once you have done that, follow the steps below to get the rubric attached.
Click on the Assignments tab and then click on the assignment name
Click on the + Rubric button
It can be found under all of the content of the page, directly underneath the table that specifies the Due Date.
Note: This button will not be found if you click Edit. It can only be found on the assignment preview page.
Name the rubric and add criteria that will be used to assess the assignment for a grade, if applicable
To add the general education outcome, select the Find Outcome button
Choose the applicable criterion
Uncheck the box "Use this criterion for scoring" so the assessment of the general education outcome does not have a direct impact on a student's grade
Click the Import button
Check the box "Use this rubric for assignment grading" so that the rubric score will be used as the assignment score
(If you don't check this, you will need to type a score in for the assignment in the grade box.)
