Proctored, Automatically Graded & Time-Restricted Canvas Quizzes (most secure)

This page describes the type of automatically graded question types associated with a proctored, automatically graded, and restricted quiz.

Automatic Grading

Automatically graded question types include:

To increase security, you can also shuffle answer options and hide student quiz responses and use question groups to deliver questions from a bank at random.

Questions may be imported into Canvas using Respondus software. If you would like or need help with this process, please submit a request. You will need to provide an answer key for self-grading questions.

Proctoring in USU Testing Centers

To proctor Canvas quizzes or exams at any USU Testing Center, you will need to add an access code to the quiz or exam in Canvas and provide the access code to USU proctors through the Materials and Testing Services (MATS) website. Students will schedule a testing appointment at https://rcde.usu.edu/mats

Proctoring in Logan at the Academic Testing Center

If all students will take the exam at the Academic Testing Center in Logan, you can use an IP Address restriction. For more information, see "Using IP Restrictions." Students will need to schedule a testing appointment at https://rcde.usu.edu/mats.

Virtual or Remote Proctoring

Virtual proctoring is available through Canvas Quizzes with Proctorio enabled.

Remote Proctoring Benefits

  • The instructor can choose whether to record camera, audio, and desktop.
  • Adding a time limit to an exam limits the number of time students can take to look up answers to questions in notes, books, or online.

Remote Proctoring Requirements

Instructors will need to use the Chrome browser with a plug-in to set up the quiz settings. Students will need to use the Chrome Browser while taking the exam. Depending on the options you select, they may also need a web camera and microphone. More details about creating a quiz can be found at Six Steps to Building a Quiz in Canvas and see Virtual Online Proctoring with Proctorio.

Proctorio recordings need to be reviewed by the instructor.

Considerations:
  • Internet connectivity: Proctorio requires students have a good, strong internet connection. Using Proctorio might cause issues for some students. If you need proctoring for your exam, use Proctorio but be prepared to deal with individual issues that might arise.
  • Exam re-entry: Allowing re-entry to an exam will address many issues of students getting kicked out of the exam because they will be able to re-enter the exam to finish it.
  • Time limit: Students are held to the time limit from when they first began the exam. Some solutions might be to extend the test due date for students who are having difficulty accessing it or make the time limit longer than you normally would to allow for additional time to figure out the technical issues that might arise during the exam.
